Without self-discipline there can be no character formation. It is nice to be able to help others but one should not have the idea that he or she is helping other persons, because this gives rise to ego. Social work is very often damaging to the character because of this tendency to breed egotism in one who is serving the others. Even when it is selfless, in the sense that no reward is expected, this tendency to the ego being boosted itself becomes reward, and as this tendency increases, it creates more and more problems. Therefore, only one who has the humility to not at all feel that he or she is doing the service is really worthy of performing the service to others.
